Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have a computer that apparently is "reading" 3 million scholarly papers and creating a digital landscape that helps visualize the state of scientific research. The software plots 3D mountains and valleys that represent peaks and troughs of interest and connecting ridges between disciplines. I saw a Bell Labs site some time ago that called this sort of visualization from computer-generated data a "metaphorical world." Someday you'll be able to fly through synthetic virtual worlds that are metaphors for complex ideas and data sets. Cool.
