You're right: to the extent that new media displaces old media, it means bad things for old media experts. But there's another way to look at this.

I love design, color and type myself, and I know the difference between rotten design and great design. There are more than 180 million websites, they say, and most of them seem never to have learned anything about design, color and type.

The web world desperately needs good designers. If you know what looks good, what reads well, and how to communicate visually, it seems to me that you'll always have work. You just have to pick up the technical part, which is not that different from Quark, PhotoShop and Illustrator.
