We get a dozen bulk email pitches a week, and this one from Cyber Promotions is a good example. They'll put a 10-line classified ad in one of their giant email pages that go to 1.3 million recipients for just $99.50. That's the early bird rate; the full rate is $299 but they've got deals: buy one get one free, a special October sale, and satisfaction guaranteed or get a free rerun.

The quality of the lists is quite low. They robotically compile email lists by scooping up addresses from America On-Line and the USENET newsgroups. Many of the addresses must be outdated, and none of them are interested prospects.

But I guess for the price, you can afford some wasted impressions. It's the opposite of direct response, however, since there's no selection of the prospect database and no response modality in the text-only bulk mailing.
