EP Writing for Interactive Media Forum

Shouldn't everyone be edited?

I know it's easy to publish yourself on the web, but how is thst different than a vanity press? Shouldn't professional writers--no matter how proficient--pass their work by professional editors? At least for copyediting, but also for content and style? (As an ex-editor for magazines, I want to say something about lunatics and asylums, but I won't.)
