EP Diary Forum The Golden Age of TV, the Golden Age of the Web In a PBS special on Sid Caesar's writers, TV writer/producer Larry Gelbart made an interesting point about the difference between TV in the 50s and TV today. He said that the audience of the 50s was better--sets were expensive and only the relatively well-to-do were tuned in, so the content aimed high. As TV became more universal, the audience broadened and the content pitched lower to please more of the people more of the time. Maybe the web today is the best it will be. When the real global mass audience logs on, the content will need broader mass appeal. Maybe these are the glory days.
